The findings support the hypothesis that the female bias in AD risk is due in part to developmental sex differences. These results suggest that developmental events that yield relatively more feminine phenotypes increase vulnerability of women to dementia. Similar effects were not observed in men.
The data demonstrate a higher (more feminine) 2D:4D in women with dementia in comparison to non-demented women. There is fairly strong evidence for a role of the 2D:4D ratio as a biomarker for the organizational (permanent) effects of prenatal testosterone on the brain and behaviour.
